General Program Description:
Pre Technical Studies is designed to provide 9th and 10th-grade students with a unique experience in career exploration as they learn about and experience each of the various career development programs at RVTC. Throughout the first portion of the year, students work collaboratively to solve real-world problems related to each program in the center. They get hands-on experience in each program, learn about the various career opportunities related to each cluster, and visit local employers to see for themselves where professionals in these fields work and what work looks like on a daily basis.
Later in the program, students are tasked with developing, executing, and reflecting upon an independently-designed career-based project that will further their learning and skills in a career that inspires them most. Throughout this course, students will have access to a variety of resources to build skills in the career of their choice, including hand and power tools, 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, CNC machines as well as a Mac & PC design lab. In addition to these tools and equipment, students may also have the opportunity to work with individual program instructors to help facilitate their learning. This program can assist in student preparation for 11th and 12th-grade technical programming as well as an insight into the world of work that awaits them as they approach adulthood.

Student/Parent Quotes:
“You get to interact with different students and experience different opportunities.”
“You get to try a whole bunch of different things and work with different people. The work in Pre Tech wasn’t easy, but I’m glad I took it.”
“Pre Tech opened my eyes to a lot of things I never knew about. I began the year with one career path in mind but through what we did in class I was able to see and try other things (jobs/careers) that I didn’t know much about. I changed my career path part way through the year to another career that I wouldn’t have known anything about. That wouldn’t have been possible without taking Pre Tech first.”
“It’s never boring. You’re always doing hands-on stuff. You get to participate in whatever the classes are doing whenever you visit them. It gives you ideas to think about a career you might want to do after high school.”
“Taking Pre Tech provides you with the life skills you will need farther down the road.”
“Amazing programs for high school students. Well organized and a true benefit to Springfield students and surrounding towns.” Pre Technical Studies Parent
